Gibson to Make Low-Key Exit on December 18

Charles Gibson will step down from “World News” on Friday, Dec. 18, ABC News said Tuesday. His successor, Diane Sawyer, is expected to start anchoring the following Monday.

The transition from Mr. Gibson to Ms. Sawyer, who is the co-host of “Good Morning America,” was announced in September. At the time, the network said the moves would be effective in January.

Instead, Ms. Sawyer plans to take over on Monday, Dec. 21, according to an ABC News executive briefed on the plans.

In making the moves only a few days before Christmas, ABC is reiterating what its executives have said for months: that it is aiming for a low-key change. The strategy could be called the anti-Katie– a reference to the breathless attention devoted to Katie Couric’s move to the “CBS Evening News” chair in 2006. More…
