Fresno Newscast Director Dies After Short Illness

By Kevin Eck

Larry Howland, newscast director for KMPH, died over the weekend after what the station said was a short illness.

The Fresno FOX affiliate posted the story on its website and announced the news on its 10:00 p.m. show. Howland started at KMPH in 1976 in the Production Department. He was named director in 1983. He directed the 10:00 p.m. news and was one of two directors for the station’s syndicated programming.

Mr. Howland was respected and admired by his peers.  He was nearly unflappable in the face of the unexpected events and stress that accompany live TV newscasts, and his co-workers and teammates in his KMPH News family loved him for his kind and generous heart which he regularly and openly shared with everyone around him.

“Larry was the consummate professional,” Jack Peck, president and general manager of KMPH said in a statement. “He performed his craft with the utmost professionalism and skill. He will be sorely missed.”

Howland is survived by his wife and daughter. The family is planning a memorial service but has not announced a date.
