Fred Kalil Named Sports Anchor at WGCL

By Aneya Fernando

fred-kalilAtlanta CBS affiliate WGCL has announced the addition of Fred Kalil to its sports team.

Kalil spent the last 22 years at WXIA, the NBC affiliate in Atlanta, before stepping down from his role in August 2013. He continued to do taped pieces for the station.

At the time, Kalil said he had not fully recovered from a brain tumor he’d had 15 years prior. This made it difficult for him to read the teleprompter and ad lib with his colleagues on-air.

“We are very excited to have Fred join the CBS46 Sports team. He brings with him over 20 years of outstanding sports reporting in Atlanta. He knows the city and the community and we look forward to him bringing our viewers the best local sports coverage in all of Atlanta,” said WGCL news director Larry Perret.

“I look forward to joining CBS46 and using my local contacts and experiences to help build the best sports department in town,” Kalil said in a release.

Kalil begins his new gig on March 23.
