For nearly four decades, Moore was the 6 p.m. anchor at the station–a regular guy with a voice of authority. “He was so darn believable on air,” said retired WCYB anchor Johnny Wood in one of the station’s many tributes Tuesday. “He was like your next door neighbor but he was a perfectionist on air.”

During his time at WCYB, Merrill covered all of the big stories and sat down with newsmakers from every level, including several presidents.

No matter the topic, he always approached it with class. “You don’t put in 40 years of news and journalism without caring.” says Assistant Johnson City city manager Charlie Stahl. “He was everything to all of us proving many times that you can still go after the important stories and still be a gentleman and professional.”
