Former NYPD Detective Turned Reporter Dies After Cancer Battle

New York City detective turned reporter Mike Sheehan died over the weekend.

The 71-year-old lost his battle to cancer, Michael Palladino, president of the NYPD’s detective endowment association confirmed to the NY Daily News.

Sheehan was a key investigator in a handful of high-profile cases including the Central Park Five case in 1989.

He retired from the force in 1992 and joined WNYW. In 2009, he left the Fox station and joined WPIX, where he covered the crime beat.

Sheehan’s colleagues remembered him on social media as a great friend and mentor to young journalists.

“Mike was a great friend and incredible reporter @PIX11News So sad to hear he’s left us too soon. #NewYorksVeryOwn,” said WPIX reporter and anchor Kirstin Cole.

“Mike Sheehan was a great journalist who enlightened a younger generation of reporters on so much of New York history. Had a story for everything and would always take the time to tell it right,” said WPIX morning anchor Dan Mannarino.

Sheehan is survived by his wife Denise and daughter Clair.
