Former Kansas City anchor Mark Alford was successful in his run for Congress.
Alford, who left Kansas City Fox affiliate WDAF in October 2021 after 23 years in local TV, won the race for Missouri’s 4th Congressional District seat by tallying 72.7% of the vote against Democrat Jack Truman‘s 24.9%.
He fills the seat left vacant when incumbent Republican Vicky Hartzler decided to focus on running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Roy Blunt.
Alford isn’t the only former TV newscaster to come out victorious in 2022 Midterm Elections. Eric Sorensen, a Democrat, won the race to represent Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. Sorenson, formerly the meteorologist at Quad Cities ABC affiliate WQAD, defeated Esther Joy King, a Republican who narrowly lost her 2020 bid to unseat Representative Cheri Bustos, the incumbent Democrat who is vacating the seat.
And of course, former KSAZ-TV Phoenix news anchor Kari Lake is in the midst of a close race with Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs for state governor. As of publication time, that race has still yet to be called.
