Joe Holbrook, veteran weatherman for Columbus, Ohio CBS affiliate WBNS has died. He was 87.

Holbrook worked at WBNS for 42 years before retiring in 1992.

WBNS gm John Cardenas was news director at WBNS when he told the Columbus Dispatch in 2000, “Joe is one of the folks who made 10TV what it is today. People around town care about him; they grew up with him. And that’s something you don’t find at many other stations.”

Holbrook was as friendly in person as he was on the air, Davis said. He was easygoing and unassuming and enjoyed telling jokes.

His tenure, [WBNS meteorologist Mike] Davis said, is unheard of today.

“The word legend gets overused, but he was a legend,” Davis said.

Chris Bradley, chief meteorologist at WBNS, recalls getting a call from Holbrook when he came to the TV station in 2005.

“It was like getting an official blessing,” he said.

Holbrook was gracious and humble, often pausing to talk with people in the community, Pat Holbrook said.

“He was always genuine,” he said. “I think that was a huge reason for his popularity and why he was on the air for so long.”
