Brenda Wood Set to Sign Off WXIA

By Chris Ariens

After 40 years in TV news, including 20 at WXIA, Brenda Wood signs off the Atlanta NBC station for the final time tonight. The station’s 5-6:30 newscast will devote a significant amount of time to Wood’s contributions to WXIA and the city of Atlanta.

In early January, Wood handed the 11 p.m. co-anchor baton to Shiba Russell.

A week later, Wood received Atlanta’s highest honor the Phoenix Award, which is the equivalent to the key to the city. The Atlanta City Council also declared Jan. 17 Brenda Wood Day.

Wood began her journalism career in 1977 as a reporter at WAAY-TV in Huntsville, AL. A year later she had a brief stint at WSM-TV in Nashville, before returning to WAAY, as anchor. In 1980, she moved to WMC-TV becoming Memphis’ first black female news anchor. Eight years later she moved to Atlanta, first to WAGA, and then, in 1997, moving to WXIA.

But you’ll still have a chance to catch Wood on TV. You just need Netflix. Wood reprises her role as a TV anchorwoman in Stranger Things 2, which returns on Halloween. Wood recorded her scenes for the hit show back in October.
