WFXT Uses #BeatLA Hashtag To Win Twitter War Against KTTV

By Merrill Knox

As local stations continue to incorporate social media into their reporting, Boston’s WFXT has found one surefire way to increase Twitter followers: a little healthy competition.

“A few months ago, we noticed to were close to being listed on Lost Remote’s list for Top Local TV Stations on Twitter,” WFXT senior web producer Kyle Bishop told Lost Remote. “We were determined to get there! It just so happened that the 5th station on the list was our sister station, KTTV FOX 11. We decided to embark on a playful competition.”

The station started using the #BeatLA hashtag, which — for Boston residents used to hearing the chant in a slightly different context, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers NBA rivalry — required little explanation.

WFXT started with a 2,500-follower deficit. Last week, the station surpassed KTTV in followers — and, by Bishop’s account, has gained nearly 5,000 followers overall.
