Bill Kurtis, Walter Jacobson Stepping Down From WBBM Anchor Desk Next Year

By Merrill Knox

WBBM evening anchor team Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson announced today that they will leave the 6 p.m. newscast in March of next year.

The pair, who gathered with colleagues to celebrate the second anniversary of their return to the Chicago CBS O&O, will hand the 6 p.m. newscast over to Rob Johnson and Kate Sullivan, who currently anchor the 5 and 10 p.m. newscast.

Kurtis and Jacobson anchored at 10 p.m. from 1973-82. It is not clear whether the pair will retire; Kurtis said he plans to focus on his other businesses.  In a statement announcing the changes, WBBM GM Bruno Cohen said the station looks forward “to continuing our association with them.”

“I look forward to another six months of anchoring with Bill,”  Jacobson said in a statement.  “Just ahead is the presidential election this fall. After that, it’s the right time to pass the baton over to Rob and Kate.”
