San Francisco station KRON has brought back “Backstory,” a documentary-style show that brings viewers into the field with KRON news crews as they work. “It’s unscripted, unplanned and really unconventional for a local television station to pull back the curtain to show the inner workings of a news department,” Jim Swanson, KRON’s programming director, told TVNewsCheck.
The show had a six-week run in May, and delivered strong enough ratings the station has added Backstory as a permanent part of the Sunday night lineup. “It generated positive viewer feedback and created buzz in the local marketplace,” said Ashley Gold Messina, KRON’s general manager.
