Austin News Director Out After 16 Years

Spectrum News Austin and San Antonio director of news and programming Michael Pearson is no longer with the station.

The move comes shortly after Time Warner Cable News became Spectrum News after being bought by Charter Communications. Pearson announced his departure Friday on his Facebook page, saying Thursday was his last day.

Pearson started working as assistant news director at the station in 2000. He was named news director in 2010, around the time it changed its name to YNN.

“I will always call myself a “reporter,” Pearson wrote on his Facebook page. “And as I do I will hold my head up high and continue to express my views about some very real fears I have for the future of American journalism and the role it plays in upholding our Democracy and speaking truth to the powerful. And speaking truth does not come from 24-hour cable television bickering or from tweets and posts. It comes from aggressive reporters competitively working the corridors of city halls, courthouses, state capitols, Congress or wherever society’s institutions reign – the fabric of our neighborhoods, the classrooms of our schools, the congregations of our houses of worship, the records of businesses.”
