Ancient Reporter Herb Welch Returns to ‘SNL’ with Nod to His Protege Andy Rooney

The senile, mic-slinging reporter Herb Welch returned to “Saturday Night Live” this weekend with a nod to Andy Rooney.

Welch, a character reminiscent of WNYW’s Dick Oliver, did his regular routine of battering interviewees with his microphone and arguing with anchors via satellite before dropping dead.  Remembering the deceased Welch, “SNL” displayed a photo of him alongside his protégé Andy Rooney (video above).
