earhart_kusa_croppedAmelia Earhart, traffic reporter for KUSA, will leave the Denver NBC affiliate when her contract is up in April.

Earhart, who is no relation to the famous missing aviator, has scheduled an around-the-world flight in June in honor of her namesake.

“It was good timing ahead of the around-the-world flight,” Earhart told The Denver Post’s Joan Ostrow.

She told viewers on her facebook page, “It’s now time to go all in with my career in aviation, inspiration, and the Fly With Amelia Foundation. Now through June, my focus will be on flight training, planning, and preparation for the around the world flight.” Earhart added her last day will be April 11 and she plans to come back on a fill-in basis.

According to Ostrow, KUSA news director Patti Dennis has been aware of Earhart’s plan since late last year and already has someone in mind to take her place, though no one was named. Dennis told Ostrow, “She’s going full bore into the Fly With Amelia Foundation. She wants to devote herself to aviation.”
