Aggressive Moves at Orlando’s WKMG Leave Viewers Guessing

It’s a tough time for media companies, and WKMG-Channel 6 has responded with cutbacks, changes and dropped newscasts.

WKMG has been through this routine several times before. The station laid off anchor Marla Weech in summer 2008. Anchor Bob Frier parted with the station in February. General Manager Henry Maldonado, who said he had been planning to retire, left in March.

When the hard times hit, the high-priced talent is especially vulnerable. Any boss can drop an expensive veteran in favor of a cheaper newcomer.

Other people are vulnerable, too: WKMG shed 15 to 20 positions this spring.

These moves are all about money in a tough economy.
