After Long Search, WCPO Names News Director

By Kevin Eck

Chip Mahaney has been named news director of Cincinnati ABC affiliate WCPO.

This is a move inside Scripps for Mahaney, who was working with WCPO GM Jeff Brogan to find a news director for the station as the national director of news recruitment. The news director position had been open since Alex Bongiorno left at the end of February.

“We scoured the country and spent a lot of time searching for the right person to lead our newsroom,” said Brogan. “The more time Chip spent with us during the interim of our search, we both began to realize that he was the best person. It’s a perfect match – his many years of TV and digital experience combined with the station’s reputation for quality journalism and for innovation. He understands what makes Cincinnati a great place while also recognizing the challenges we face in this community.”

He’s worked at Scripps since 2008 and has held news management roles for CBS News and local stations in Austin, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Dallas.
