By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

After fighting cancer five different times, longtime award-winning Virginia news anchor Jane Gardner died over the weekend.

The broadcast journalist worked for decades at WTKR, the CBS affiliate in Norfolk. Va.

She left television in 1998 and was first diagnosed with breast cancer a year later. Then, starting in 2009, she was diagnosed three more times with cancer: skin cancer in 2009, ovarian cancer in 2015 and lung cancer in 2016.

Gardner spoke to WTKR in 2015 after her ovarian diagnosis.

“There are people who are so much worse off than me. I feel very fortunate that I didn’t die the first time around or the second and I’m here today having really had a really wonderful life and we’ll see what happens. A very wise man once told me, just live every day,” she said at the time.

Gardner is being remembered by friends and colleagues as an honorable woman and journalist.
