After 36 Years, Jim Swift Retiring from KXAN

By Kevin Eck

KXAN reporter Jim Swift has announced he’s retiring from the Austin NBC affiliate after 36 years.

“I have been enormously blessed to be able to do this kind of work for so long,” said Swift in a statement. “Meeting literally thousands of gifted, creative, funny and heartfelt people and getting to help them tell their stories has thrilled me, entertained me, inspired me and often, moved me to tears. I deeply hope others have been impacted the same way.”

Swift, who started at what was then KTVV in 1977, is best known for his “On the Porch” reports which news managers asked him to create to showcase regular people, “people whose contributions to society might otherwise go unnoticed.”

“Jim has an incredible sense of what subjects and which people will be compelling,” said KXAN news director Chad Cross. “His storytelling is truly an art, from the writing and narrating, to the photography and editing.”
