WSJ: Univision Planning 24 Hour Cable News Channel

By Alex Weprin

Spanish-language broadcaster Univision is planning to launch a suite of cable channels… possibly including a new 24-hour news channel.

According to the Wall St. Journal, two new channels will launch in the next year, dedicated to telenovelas and sports, respectively. The Spanish-language news channel, Univision 24-7, could launch later.

Hispanics are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the U.S., and Univision regularly tops its English-language broadcast competition.

The company also has extensive TV news chops, led by evening news anchor Jorge Ramos. Ramos was the first journalist President George W. Bush spoke to after being reelected in 2004.

Late last year the company reorganized the leadership at its news division.

A Spanish-language cable channel–while not competing directly with competitors like CNN, MSNBC or Fox News, has the potential to become a draw for news-hungry Latinos.
