‘World News Tonight’ Wins Viewers, ‘Nightly News’ Wins the Demo

By Chris Ariens

It was a split decision for the evening newscasts last week. As David Muir‘s “World News Tonight” won its third week in a row in total viewers, Lester Holt‘s “NBC Nightly News” overtook ABC in the A25-54 demo.  But only the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” saw year-over-year growth in both measurements: up 8 percent in viewers and up 1 percent in the demo.

“World News Tonight” was up 2 percent in viewers but down -13 percent in the demo. “Nightly News” was down double digits in both: down -10% in viewers and down -11% in the demo. This is the first time “Nightly News” has won the demo in six weeks. Muir’s newscast is averaging a half million more viewers this season vs. last season.
