Woman Sets Herself On Fire After She Is Subject Of ‘Nancy Grace’ Segment

By Alex Weprin

A woman killed herself by setting herself on fire Saturday after she was the subject of a segment on the HLN program “Nancy Grace.” The woman, Toni Medrano, was charged with manslaughter last month over the death of her daughter, who she was accused of smothering after she passed out due to her drinking. Grace dubbed Medrano “Vodka Mom” on the segment, which aired June 11.

Medrano watched the Grace segment, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Maria Phillips, Medrano’s younger sister, said Medrano was “shaking and couldn’t take a breath” as she watched Grace’s show. “She got depressed and said life wasn’t worth living. She said she couldn’t live with herself.”

Medrano is the second woman to kill herself after being featured on a segment of Grace’s HLN show. In 2006, another mother that Grace accused of killing her child shot herself after she taped an interview with the HLN host. The family of that woman sued Grace and HLN for the death. The two sides would eventually settle.

We have reached out to HLN for comment, and will update if we hear back.
