Willie Geist May Be Nasdaq’s New Good Luck Charm

By A.J. Katz

NBC News’ Willie Geist rang the Nasdaq Opening Bell this morning in celebration of Today’s 65th anniversary and his own program Sunday Today with Willie Geist, which debuted in April 2016. The Nasdaq composite advanced 26 points today, or .48 percent, to 5,573. That’s the exchange’s sixth record close of 2017. Something tells me Geist and his team will be welcomed back to Nasdaq’s Times Square studio with open arms in the very near future.

Nasdaq vice president David Wicks was happy to have Geist and his production team in the building this morning. “It’s not easy to create a fresh take on a 65 year old brand, but that’s exactly what Willie has done,” said Wicks.

In addition to celebrating Today’s 65th anniversary, Geist gave a shout out to his colleague Matt Lauer during the ceremony, who recently celebrated 20 years as an anchor on Today:  “We are proud to honor Matt, the best in the business. 65 years of Today and 20 years of Matt Lauer,” said Geist. “Now we’re carrying that long Today show legacy with us on Sunday mornings.”

Geist and his crew weren’t the only members of the NBCU family to stop by the Nasdaq on Friday. Fast Money celebrated 10 years on CNBC by ringing the Nasdaq Closing Bell.

The show welcomed a number of all-star guests throughout the week including billionaire Carl Icahn, Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnik and TV icon Regis Philbin. And to end the celebratory week on a high-note, Fast Money host Melissa Lee, the Fast Money traders and the Fast Money team rang that famous bell, though they didn’t have to travel far.
