Why Did CNN Air a New Episode of ‘Larry King Live’ Over The Weekend, After the ‘Final’ Episode?

By Alex Weprin

There was a new episode of “Larry King Live” Saturday night, and it wasn’t the “Saturday Night Live” sketch we posted Sunday morning.

Indeed, CNN televised a new installment of the program at 9 PM Saturday, addressing “The War on Cancer.” King had on as guests Dr. Dean Ornish, Michael Milken, Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, Dr. Derek Raghavan and CNN’s own Dr. Sanjay Gupta to discuss the state of cancer research.

CNN televised a star-studded “final” edition of “Larry King Live” on Thursday evening, winning its timeslot with 2.240 million total viewers and 530,000 adults 25-54, so why run a new episode two days later?

It turns out the cancer special was taped a few weeks ago, and was supposed to air before King’s December 16 finale. It wasn’t quite ready in time, and because of the important topic, the network decided to run it, rather than let it sit unused.

It will not count toward the four specials per year King will host for CNN.

By running it as a special on Saturday, it was not technically a new edition of his daily interview program. So for all you sticklers out there, Thursday’s program was indeed the last new installment of “Larry King Live.”
