Who’s Next to Face the Nation?

The New York Observer’s Felix Gillette speculates about who will be the next moderator of CBS’ Face the Nation.

The job, however, will not be up for grabs for quite some time. The current moderator, Bob Schieffer, recently announced that he would likely stay with the program after the 2009 inauguration (his original end date).

Gillette breaks up the potential replacement into a variety of categories, like Internal Promotion (Jeff Greenfield, for example), Experienced Veteran (Gillette cites Chris Matthews) and Format Buster (Al Gore is brought up).

Another option Gillette notes would be to move current CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric to the Face the Nation position. Gillette quotes former CNN president, Reese Schonfeld, who says he would also expand her role on 60 Minutes and give her a series of prime time specials, and find someone new for the Evening News. “She’d probably end up making more money for the company that way than by sticking around doing the third-place evening show,” Schonfeld said.
