Weijia Jiang Named CBS News White House Correspondent

By A.J. Katz

CBS is strengthening its coverage of the Trump White House by elevating Weijia Jiang to the role of CBS News White House correspondent.

Jiang will be reporting daily from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for all CBS broadcasts and platforms, including CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor, and for CBSN, the network’s 24/7 streaming news service.

She will debut in her new role this evening during the network’s coverage of President Trump’s Supreme Court announcement, reporting from the White House.

Jiang is no stranger to the company. She has been covering the White House for Newspath–CBS’ 24-hour television newsgathering service for CBS stations and broadcasters around the world–since 2015. Over that time, she has reported on both the Obama and Trump administrations, the 2016 campaign and election, the funeral of former First Lady Barbara Bush; and the Congressional baseball shooting that wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise. She has also covered national stories such as Hurricane Harvey, the catastrophic Cat. 4 hurricane that hit Texas last summer.

Recently, Jiang traveled with President Trump to Canada, to cover the G-7 summit and participated in a rare impromptu press gaggle with Trump on the North Lawn of the White House last month. She also provided Network-wide coverage of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the Supreme Court vacancy.

CBS News vice president and Washington Bureau Chief Chris Isham announced the news today.

“Over the past several months, Weijia Jiang has consistently shown that she has what it takes to cover this White House—she asks the right questions, she provides context and depth, and she is fast on her feet,” Isham said in a statement. “We are thrilled that she is joining our White House team.”

“I am honored and excited to fill this role for CBS News,” Jiang added. “It comes with a great responsibility that I am reminded of daily, as news out of Washington continues to break at an exceptional pace. Although we cover the White House from here, the stories impact the lives of every single American. Our team works tirelessly to deliver the latest and most accurate information and I am proud to work alongside such a dedicated group of journalists.”

Before coming to CBS News, Jiang was a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor at WCBS-TV in New York (2012-2015) where she covered Superstorm Sandy; the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.; and the Boston Marathon bombings.
