War on the ‘War on Christmas’

By Brian

There’s a war against the “war on Christmas!”

…In today’s Observer, Joe Conason speculates that “Fox News Channel’s blowhards and political preachers have exaggerated (or even invented) the notion of a ‘war on Christmas’ for their own purposes.” He doesn’t let a sentence slide without attacking Fox. “Like many paranoid fantasies, this Fox fraud is not entirely imaginary, although the quality of reporting on that network dictates extreme caution about accepting its version of events,” he says…

…On Romenesko’s letters page today, former FNC producer Charlie Reina says is “ground zero in the culture wars that polarize so much of America these days.” He calls the war on Christmas “a production” of FNC. It is, he says, “the very network that has made accusation, recrimination and confrontation the gold standards of cable ‘news,’ and whose personalities have fashioned a self-serving ‘war’ out of whole cloth, thanks to a scattered handful of [political/correctness] dupes and a shameless management willing to use even Christmas for its own political ends…”

> Update: 10:15pm: Fox News spokesperson Paul Schur responded on Romenesko: Charlie’s rants [below] about Fox News are both predictable and sad. For his sake, we hope he stops howling at the moon and moves on with his life. We wish him well in his current role making cabinets out of his garage.”

…And in Plano, Texas, “school officials want talk show host Bill O’Reilly to retract his on-air comment about the district banning students from wearing red and green because the colors represent Christmas.” The Associated Press says O’Reilly called it “flat-out fascism,” but the school district said it never has prohibited such clothing, calling it a “false rumor…”
