Vice News is bolstering its Washington bureau by adding Joe Tone as Deputy Washington editor for Vice News Tonight, the nightly newscast on HBO.

Prior to joining Vice News, Tone was most recently editor-in-chief of the Dallas Observer. He was also named a finalist for a PEN America Literary Award for his 2017 book “Bones: Brothers, Horses, and has previous reported for The Washington Post, Deadspin and the Washingtonian.

Shawna Thomas, Washington Bureau Chief for News made the announcement to the news team this morning, obtained by TVNewser:

Hi folks,

Joe Tone started last week as the Deputy Washington Editor, but this week he is in Brooklyn to observe the magic that is putting VNT together.  Instead of awkwardly googling him, you can just read about him on his own website: http://www.joetonewrites.com/

There you will find out he wrote a book about Mexican drug cartels and horse racing.  So his love of obscure stories will allow him to fit right in at VICE News.

Joe was hired to help our team with story development and writing, along with other aspects of bureau management, but please seek him out while he is up there, introduce yourselves and and tell him how you’re thankful he’s been hired to help the DC office survive the never-ending political news cycle.

Vice News Tonight won a Peabody Award and four News and Documentary Awards in 2018 for its critically acclaimed story from August 2017, Charlottesville: Race & Terror, where Vice Newser Elle Reeve and her team followed a White supremacist who was protesting the removal of Confederate monuments in Charlottesville, Va.

We covered the launch of the HBO nightly newscast, produced by Vice, in October 2016.
