Using archived radar imagery, professors and students at Virginia Tech recreated the deadly 2013 tornado that ripped through Moore, OK in a 3D environment. This 3D simulation took place in the four-story “Cube” at the Institute for Creativity, Arts & Technology.
The experience allowed Cantore and Forbes to walk around and through the supercell to view the storm from every angle, with terrain, population and roads added for reference. Researchers at Va. Tech hope to advance to the point where they can input live radar data into the large-scale 3D environment.
