Trump Isn’t Under Investigation. Unless He Is. But He’s Not. But He Could Be.

Pres. Trump’s personal lead attorney Jay Sekulow appeared on the Sunday shows this morning to state, unequivocally, that his client is not under investigation. Sekulow repeated that fact during all his appearances. But during his interview with Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace–the last of his round robin interviews–he twice said the president was under investigation, before clarifying that he’s not. Here’s what Sekulow said, which led to a back forth about what he said, or what he meant to say, or what he was getting at (but still said):

The president takes action based on numerous events including recommendations from his Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General’s office. He takes the action that they also, by the way, recommended, and now he’s being investigated by the Department of Justice because the special counsel under the special counsel regulations reports, still, to the department of justice, not an independent counsel. So he’s being investigated for taking the action that the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General recommended him to take by the agency who recommended the termination.
