Tony Dokoupil Signs New Deal to Remain at CBS News

CBS Mornings co-anchor Tony Dokoupil has signed a new deal to remain at CBS News.

Variety reported the news Monday morning.

Previously a CBS News correspondent, Dokoupil joined the network’s weekday morning show as a co-anchor in May 2019, as part of a significant shift enacted by then-president Susan Zirinsky that moved Norah O’Donnell into the evening news anchor role—and John Dickerson to CBS Sunday Morning and adding chief political analyst to his responsibilities. Longtime weekend morning anchor Anthony Mason moved to weekday mornings with Dokoupil, joining CBS weekday morning legend Gayle King.

The current iteration of CBS Mornings features Dokoupil, King and co-anchor Nate Burleson, who joined the broadcast nearly a year ago.

Dokoupil hasn’t been tethered to the morning anchor desk over the past three years. He has co-anchored the broadcast from across the world, including the Ukraine-Poland border earlier this year, Hurricane Laura from Lake Charles, La. in August 2020 and from Uvalde, Texas earlier this summer.

Married to MSNBC anchor Katy Tur, Dokoupil joined CBS News in August 2016 as a correspondent primarily contributing to CBS Sunday Morning. He previously served as a MSNBC correspondent, was a senior writer at NBC News and—before that—a writer at Newsweek and The Daily Beast.

It’s an interesting time for the broadcast’s morning shows. For the past several weeks, Good Morning America has ranked No. 1, not only in average total viewers, but also in the key A25-54 demographic, a category NBC’s Today Show has traditionally dominated. Meanwhile, CBS Mornings has seen its share increase among women aged 25-54—a niche, but important audience for TV news advertisers. All three morning shows continue to see Nielsen ratings decline on a year-over-year basis as audiences, particularly younger ones, are increasingly cutting the cord and/or turning to other avenues for their daily morning information, including podcasts and newsletters.
