Tom Brokaw is a journalist through and through, even as he undergoes treatment for bone marrow cancer.
“I think I’m going to be okay,” Brokaw told TVNewser this afternoon at the Peabody Awards ceremony in New York City, where he was honored with a Personal Peabody Award. “I’ve approached it [dealing with cancer] both in human terms, and as a journalist.” He’s researched as much as he can about the cancer he’s being treated for — multiple myeloma — and about how other cancers. Brokaw continues to report for “Today,” and “NBC Nightly News,” and will be doing special pieces for the upcoming 70th anniversary of D-Day, all while undergoing treatment. Brokaw led NBC’s coverage of the 60th anniversary of D-Day from Normandy, France.
This afternoon, he took time to catch up with fellow Peabody Award recipient, “CBS This Morning” co-anchor Charlie Rose. (More on the awards, later)
“There’s a larger light at the end of the tunnel,” Brokaw says. While there are “no guarantees,” the NBC Newsman says he’s fortunate to have access to the type of medical treatment he needs.
