This Weekend In Inaccurate Reporting: CNN and Fox News Edition

By Alex Weprin

Hong Kong is not located in South America, and President Obama did not offer to fund a museum dedicated to Muslim culture as the government remains shut down.

Those two facts did not stop CNN and Fox News from erroneously leading viewers down those mistaken paths this weekend.

On “New Day Saturday,” CNN was reporting on giant hornets in China, and featured a map on the screen. Unfortunately, the map placed Hong Kong squarely in Southeastern Brazil (see the photo above). For more memorable map errors, see some of our previous coverage.

On Fox News, anchor Anna Kooiman referenced a report that President Obama offered to pay out of pocket for a museum of Muslim culture to stay open while the rest of government remained shut down. Unfortunately, that report was from a parody website, and had no basis in reality. The Huffington Post has the video.

Update: Kooiman apologized in a tweet.
