Media-industry research executive Robin Garfield has joined CNN Worldwide to lead the research function supporting the news organization’s domestic portfolio of networks and businesses, it was announced today by Jack Wakshlag, chief research officer of CNN parent company Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. In the newly created role of senior vice president of CNN Research, Garfield will oversee the creation and delivery of market insights and performance analysis specific to CNN/U.S., HLN, and CNN Airport Network. She will provide research leadership and strategic insight to CNN’s executive team, as well as to its ad sales and affiliate sales organizations. Garfield will be based in CNN’s New York offices and will report to Wakshlag.

“CNN’s leadership is a direct result of our understanding of how people consume news and information today and our focus on deepening their relationship with our brand going-forward,” said Wakshlag. “Robin’s hire reflects the importance CNN places on evolving our interaction with our audiences. To this critical effort, she brings media-research expertise developed over a 20-year career; a reputation as an innovator of systems, strategies and structures; and operating experience in programming and scheduling, business development and production. She’s also a proven leader and a team player, which are prerequisites at CNN and Turner Broadcasting.”

Garfield joins CNN from Scripps Networks, where since 2005 she has served as vice president of sales research and strategy supporting HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living Network and Great American Country. Previously, she was vice president of strategic operations and research for MSNBC, responsible for audience research; scheduling; documentary production; archives; rights and clearances; and business development. Garfield rose through the ranks of the NBC research organization, having initially overseen program, ad sales and affiliate research for CNBC and MSNBC.

Garfield joined Tribune Broadcasting Company in 1990 and ultimately led the ad sales research group for Tribune PLUS before departing for NBC in 1995. She began her research career at Harrington, Righter & Parsons, Inc. in New York. Garfield earned a bachelor of arts degree in English at Colgate University.
