“The Peacock Network Is Making Sure” Americans Don’t Forget The Gulf Coast

Wiley Hilburn writes in the Shreveport Times:

“Perhaps the major failure in American journalism is the lack of a follow-up story or stories — even on a big event.

But Brian Williams and NBC News have done a clinic on the art of the follow-up, spending time on the tragic Hurricane Katrina-New Orleans disaster almost every day on the 5:30 p.m. broadcast. That’s journalism as history almost five months after the Louisiana city was all but destroyed.”

Hilburn says other news organizations have focused on the devastation, “but only NBC News clings to the story with an abiding grip.” He concludes: “Louisiana should make known its gratitude to NBC News. The administration, with a growing deficit, may like to see Louisiana lose priority. The Peacock network is making sure that does not happen.”

NBC Nightly News originates from New Orleans again tonight. “Joining Brian will be musicians Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis,” The Daily Nightly says…
