The Network Morning Shows Have Lost 1 Million Viewers in the Last Two Years

By Chris Ariens

Good Morning America is the most-watched network morning show for the 6th straight season, while NBC’s Today show has its 2nd straight first place finish in the A25-54 demo.

But in a troubling trend all three morning shows continue to lose viewers.

The three morning shows averaged 12.178 million viewers last season, that’s down -717,000 viewers (-6 percent) from the 12.895 million who watched during the 2015-2016 season, which was down -353,000 viewers (-3 percent) vs. the 2014-2015 season.

So in two years, the three morning shows have lost more than 1 million viewers.

Compared to the 2015-2016 season, CBS This Morning is down the least, losing 13,000 viewers (or less than .05 percent) while down -4 percent in the demo. ABC is down -7 percent in viewers and down -11 percent in the demo. And the Today show is down -8 percent in viewers and down -11 percent in the demo.

Compared to the same week last year GMA is down -6 percent in viewers and down -10 percent in the demo; NBC is down -5 percent in viewers and down -13 percent in the demo; and CBS is down -5 percent in viewers and down -19 percent in the demo.

In one small sign of growth, CBS This Morning’s total viewer take for Q3 2017 was +4,000 viewers higher than its Q3 2016.
