The Debut of Today’s Class of 2020

“For the next 13 years,” Natalie Morales said this morning, introducing the first installment of Today’s Class of 2020 project, “we’re going to be following a group of students from their very first day of kindergarten to their high school graduation.”

As we posted yesterday, NBC is calling the series an ‘unprecedented’ look at the public school system. This morning’s story showed the kids meeting kindergarten teacher Mrs. Tapper, saying goodbye to their parents (sometimes tearfully), and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Morales said Today had approached “many” school districts about the project, and that the parents of kids at this particular school — in L.A. — agreed to let their children be videotaped for the series. The kids, Morales added, are “used to” the cameras, with home video equipment so prevalent these days.
