The CBS Evening News-Less

The new “style” of the CBS Evening News, referred to below and epitomized by last night’s long interview with Karen James, is the subject of a fierce debate on, of all places, CBSNews.com. One commenter called the broadcast “The CBS Evening News-LESS.” Here’s a sample:

> “I have always like Katie, but last night I turned the channel. I could not watch that never ending interview with the dead mountain climber’s wife anymore. Why did she go on so long with this? It was absolutely ridiculous! I am sorry she lost her husband, but why monopolize half the newscast with this?”

> “It was painful to watch a news organization with such a rich history of excellence put on a story like this. What was even worse was going to commercial– and then keep going.”

> “I cannot help but think of all those persons in Iraq and other troubled spots in the world who have given their lives in the past week and their heartbroken family members who, by comparison, seem to go unnoticed. Apparently, their loss does not produce ratings!”
