Super Bowl Spot Reunites Still-Confused Couric, Gumbel

By Mark Joyella

In a clever spot set to air during the Super Bowl, former “Today” co-hosts Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel take a spin in an electric car and, well, they haven’t got a clue how the damn thing works. “It’s built using wind? From a windmill?”

The spot riffs on a classic 1994 clip of the morning show duo being flat-out stumped as to what the “internet” might be, and how an email address worked. “What is internet, anyway,” Gumbel asked. Jump to 2015, and BMW’s i3 is just as confusing. It also gives the pair a chance to catch up, with Couric grooving to “Electric Avenue,” and Gumbel asking “can you twerk?”

Couric debuted the spot on Monday morning’s “Today” and talked to Matt Lauer about “internet” and Gumbel.
