Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu is becoming our favorite political surrogate. Minutes after the networks declared Mitt Romney the winner of the state’s primary at 8pmET, Sununu — a Romney supporter — went on MSNBC. After Rachel Maddow and Ed Schutlz asked their questions, Lawrence O’Donnell remarked that the first President Bush got 53% of the vote when he ran in the New Hampshire primary, adding, “he was a more powerful candidate in New Hampshire than Mitt Romney was tonight.”
As with his appearance with Chris Matthews on Sunday, Sununu went after the questioner. This time, O’Donnell:
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Sununu interjected. “In 1988 he won it (with) 38%.” O’Donnell was using Bush’s 1992 numbers.
You’re really funny. You can’t resist, you really can’t resist it, can you? George Herbert Walker Bush came in in 1992 as an incumbent Republican president. Of course he got over 50%. I see no parallel in the primary. I see no parallel in the general, and I think you’re grasping at straws. But other than that you’re okay!
