Sunday Show Ratings: October 1

By A.J. Katz

It was not exactly a “Sunday Funday” when it came to the ratings for the Sunday public affairs shows.

CBS’s Face the Nation with John Dickerson finished No.1 in total viewers on the first Sunday of the new broadcast season, delivering approximately +456,000 more total viewers than the second place finisher.

NBC’s Meet the Press with Chuck Todd took the top spot among adults 25-54 after winning the 2016-2017 broadcast season across the board. MTP has now been the No. 1 Sunday show among younger news viewers (adults 25-54) for 11 consecutive weeks.

ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos got off to a slow start this season, finishing No. 3 not just in total viewers, but also falling to CBS in the ad-friendly A25-54 demo. ABC beat CBS in the demo last season. We will see if this is a trend that continues.

Fox News Sunday hosted by Chris Wallace aired at 8 a.m. ET due to FOX’s morning broadcast of Saints-Dolphins from London. As a result, the program failed to deliver 1 million viewers on the broadcast network. The trio of cable replays, at 2 p.m., 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.ET , respectively, delivered nearly 2.5 million total viewers and 516,000 adults 25-54. Combined with the FOX broadcast, the Oct. 1 edition of FNS delivered 3.42 million total viewers and 806,000 from the demo.

Al Punto hosted by Jorge Ramos defeated Fox News Sunday among younger news viewers, including the news advertiser-friendly A25-54 demographic. Additionally, Al Punto delivered more millennials than This Week. The program also delivered year-over-year audience growth in millennial viewers (+32 percent) adults 18-49 (+14 percent) and perhaps most notably adults 25-54 (+7 percent).

Editor’s Note: Face the Nation’s second half-hour was broadcast contiguously across 59.8% of the CBS affiliates.
