A combination of greater-than-usual interest in the news due to Saturday’s atrocities in Charlottesville, compounded with the fact that the 2016 Rio Olympics aired at this time last year provided the Sunday shows with solid audience gains versus the comparable Sunday in 2016 (Aug. 14).
NBC’s Meet the Press with Chuck Todd won the Sunday public affairs ratings race across the board on Aug. 13. More than 3.6 million total viewers tuned into the broadcast this past Sunday – the show’s largest total audience since April 9, and largest A25-54 audience since May 14. MTP was pre-empted at this time last year due to the Olympics.
CBS’s Face the Nation with John Dickerson finished No. 2 in total viewers, and No. 3 in the key A25-54 demo. FTN improved +0.3 percent in total viewers, and +3 percent in the demo from last year.
ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos finished No. 2 in the news demo, and No. 3 in total viewers. Stephanopoulos’s highly-anticipated interview with former White House comms director Anthony Scaramucci, his first since departing the administration earlier this month, provided the show with its most-watched telecast in over 5 months, since March 26. The program was +4 percent in total viewers, and +1 percent in the demo from last year.
Fox News Sunday hosted by Chris Wallace posted the most year-over-year growth of the English language Sunday shows. The original broadcast of FNS on FOX was +6 percent in total viewers and +10 percent in the demo from last year. The show’s sole cable replay posted 2.9 million total viewers and 702,000 demo viewers. Altogether, the show delivered nearly 4.4 million total viewers and 1.2 million demo viewers.
Univision’s Al Punto hosted by Jorge Ramos continues to resonate with millennials. The program posted +15 percent gains in the 18-34 demo from the comparable Sunday last year, while out-performing both FOX and CBS in the category.
