‘Summer Camp’ Continues in Rio for Today Show

The Today show began coverage from Brazil this morning four days before the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. It’ll be the show’s third road trip in as many weeks following the RNC in Cleveland and the DNC in Philadelphia.

“It’s like summer camp,” Al Roker told us during coverage from the RNC. “We’re all together for extended periods of time, which we don’t always get, and we get to have dinner together, we get to hang out together.”

Matt Lauer and Hoda Kotb are already on the ground, reporting from Rio this morning. Roker will join later this week. Last month, Savannah Guthrie announced she won’t be going to Brazil due to Zika concerns. She is pregnant with her second child.

“We always come out of these stronger as a team than we did going in,” Roker said of the road trips. “We’re always more jazzed, more energized, more together, more in sync.”

With Rio de Janeiro just one hour ahead of Eastern Time, the team will be working similar hours.

“Yes, they can be tiring,” Roker said. “But here’s what the positive is: we’ve got a really good team. Frankly, as far as camaraderie and chops, I think we’ve got the best morning team going.”
