STII: Linen Napkins & Designated Drivers

By Chris Ariens

The NYTimes’ Alessandra Stanley reviews last night’s coverage of Super Tuesday II, or lack of it. “Not having a prime-time election report on ABC, CBS or NBC was a little like celebrating an anniversary at an all-you-can-eat buffet instead of a fancy French restaurant: nobody leaves hungry, but it would have been nice to mark the event with a decent wine and starched linen napkins.”

Stanley adds’ “NBC, at least, had the luxury of dispatching its star political reporters — Tim Russert, Brian Williams and the emeritus anchor Tom Brokaw — to its sister cable station.”

“Cable news alternated between live news and animated panel discussions. Campbell Brown, who recently left NBC for CNN, added some welcome pizazz to CNN’s ever-steady but staid election night coverage; on MSNBC, Chuck Todd, NBC’s political director, provided welcome restraint to the bubbly loquacity of Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews; Mr. Todd, who is a whiz at delegate counting, is the designated driver of MSNBC’s political coverage, keeping his eyes on the road while the school boys get punch-drunk on exit polls.”
