Former CBS Newser Steve Sando died Tuesday at the age of 48. Sando, who lived in St. Paul, MN, had a number of health issues. He was hospitalized several weeks ago with problems relating to his heart and diabetes.
Most recently Sando was the broadcast technical manager for the 2008 Republican National Convention.
In 1990, Sando was named operations director of special events for CBS News. He later served as director of operations for London and all of Europe for the network and headed up CBS’ presidential election coverage in 1996.

I have great fun memories of Steve Sando. We worked all over the world together (thanks to CBS). He lived in London and worked in the CBS bureau when I was there. He thought London was SOOO boring because pubs closed at 11p. He made me laugh…every time I saw him. Always teasing me about how tiny I was, he would hold his fist together like King Kong holding Fay Raye and say “I didn’t mean to kill her.” It never ceased to make me laugh. Larger than life, yes, with a heart to match. You’ll be missed, Sandman.
