Steve Kroft: ‘I worry we are an imperiled profession’

By Chris Ariens

NYDaily News’ Richard Huff talks with “60 Minutes” correspondent Steve Kroft about his future with the venerable news magazine and the future of the industry:

“There’s some talented people out there … the environment for them is much more difficult,” he said. “Unfortunately, in the case of television news, I think it’s true, it has nothing to do with the quality of the people, it has everything to do with the journalism. I worry we are an imperiled profession.”

Kroft is uncertain how long he’ll stick around. He’s got another year on his contract. “I’m not going to work until my 80s,” he said. “I love what I’m doing, I don’t want to abandon one of the last outposts of journalism. And I would like to leave knowing … there will be somebody (with) the quality of my colleagues as a replacement.”

Kroft will pick up the RTDNA’s Paul White Award at next week’s NAB/RTDNA conference. TVNewser will be there to cover it.
