CBS News morning VP Steve Friedman doesn’t sound confident in this USA Today story about the morning wars:

“…With a veteran broadcaster like Vieira coming on board, Today would have to take a major stumble to lose its ratings momentum anytime soon, says Early Show chief Steve Friedman.

‘Today is like Kleenex or Jell-O. It invented the brand,’ says Friedman, who ran Today in the ’80s and ’90s. ‘Others can’t really win unless Today gives it up. Basically, GMA and The Early Show have to look at Today — and hope for failure.

So that’s his strategy?…
