Smog Alert in Beijing Forces Reporters to Wear Masks

It’s not an easy time to report from Beijing, where smog has reached levels 17 times worse than the level deemed “hazardous.”

The smog alert in China–coming as world leaders gather in Paris for climate change talks–has forced journalists to appear on camera wearing protective masks. Sky News correspondent Katie Stallard admitted “it looks, I am very aware, quite ridiculous.”

But government officials have warned people to stay inside–and wear masks if forced to go outside. Stallard said she won’t get a break after her live report, as air quality even indoors is considered unsafe.
