Scott Pelley Celebrates His Birthday, in a Trailer, in Philly

By Chris Ariens

CBS News staffers took a few moments to celebrate CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley’s 59th birthday ahead of tonight’s coverage of DNC Day 4.

During the editorial meeting in a trailer-turned-conference room outside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, staffers surprised Pelley with a carrot cake. Pelley has been anchoring Evening News from the floor of the DNC instead of the skybox, “where you are glassed in and removed from the action like you are watching from a submarine,” Pelley told Variety.

It’s a change from last week when he along with NBC’s Lester Holt and ABC’s David Muir anchored from the skyboxes of the Quicken Loans Arena during the RNC.

Pelley is wrapping up a marathon few weeks of heavy news stories — anchoring from Dallas following the murder of three police officers, to Cleveland for the RNC, getting the first joint interview with Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine for 60 Minutes, and then to Philadelphia for the DNC.
