Schieffer’s New Deal

By Chris Ariens

The WaPo reports that Bob Schieffer is set to sign a new “long term deal” today that will keep the 71-year-old from retiring.

Howard Kurtz writes, “With Katie Couric‘s future uncertain, CBS News President Sean McManus talked one of his most durable stars — who has already filled in once as interim anchor — out of leaving. McManus doesn’t have an immediate replacement for ‘Face the Nation.’ And the two men have become close friends.”

Long term “means I’ll be at CBS for the rest of my life,” Schieffer joked, adding that he plans to host “Face” for several more years.

But the news makes you wonder if McManus is making sure his “close friend” is around in case he’s needed to be called up, again, to anchor the Evening News.
