Sarah Palin Suing New York Times For Defamation

By Chris Ariens

Former Alaska Governor, Vice Presidential nominee, and Fox News contributor Sarah Palin is suing the New York Times for defamation.

In a June 14 editorial, the Times wrote that heated political rhetoric played a part in the shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords. The editorial connected Sarah Palin‘s PAC with the actions of Jared Lee Loughner, who fired upon Giffords, and others, during an outdoor constituent meeting in Tucson on January 8, 2011.

The Times acknowledged and corrected the error saying “no such link was established,” and tweeted, “We’re sorry about this and we appreciate that our readers called us on the mistake.”

“Mrs. Palin brings this action to hold The Times accountable for defaming her by publishing a statement that it knew to be false,” the suit reads. “In doing so, the Times violated the law and its own policies.”

Palin is seeking damages that a jury will determine.

“We defend against any claim vigorously,” a New York Times spokeswoman told TVNewser. As Fox News’s Brit Hume noted, the bar is high for Palin:
